Me Then…."The Budding Nerd"
I don’t know when my love of design and costuming began. I think it has always been there. When other kids wanted store bought costumes for Halloween I always seemed to think…I can make it better. So began my life of sewing, stitching, and piecing things together for the sake of looking different. Who am I? I am 43 year old, pin-up loving, retro, cosplaying nerd. I am commonly referred to the as the “Queen of all Nerds” in my own home.
Growing up in the 70s and
80s I began my deep rooted love affair with all things campy. Especially
TV! Among my favorites were Wonder Woman, Star Trek, Addams Family, and
Batman. Attending a performing arts high school did not curb my appetite
for the “strange and unusual” or quash my weirdness. Yes, I am a band
geek too! Saxophone …12 years.
My mother was a seamstress
so I picked up bits and pieces from her. Of course, I did not appreciate
all the “handmade” items when I was younger and I did not think it was worth my
time to listen when she was trying to teach me the basics of sewing.
Urgh! The pressures of fitting in. Needless to say, I don’t sew
like most people. I don’t use patterns…I don’t think I could read one if
I tried. I see something in my head and make it. It may not be the
right way but it is my way. This has lead me to look at items and cut
them up and start all over. I love to repurpose unloved items.
Me Now… "Somewhere Along the
Way I EMBRACED My Nerd-dom"
In addition to my “day job”
in athletics department at the local university I also work with Toy Robot
Photography as a set designer/ art director…whatever the hell that means and I
do a bit of retro modeling for fun.
I try to attend several
Cons a year and it is a family event for us. My daughters and I are
ALWAYS fully decked out in costume while my hubby is the official photographer
/ handler…sorry dear. I approach cosplay from the perspective of
“re-envision”. Whenever I create a costume it is always re-envisioned to
fit my personality. I also like to repurpose unloved items for retro
clothing or cosplay. When you have a family of four you have a bit of
budget. Especially when you have to outfit three people.
I currently live in
Bartlett with my husband Darrell and two daughters Scarlett and Aria. (Who are
jr nerds in training).
In my free time I enjoy
reading, Netflix marathons, collecting vintage jewelry and eye glasses,
shopping and people watching.
