Arrrrgh Matey!

Did you know that pirates and the pirating community has its very own holiday?

September 19th marked the 15th annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day and like most good pirates I spent the last couple of days in my "kit" (pirate costume) being active in my community. Although TLAPDay was initially created as a "spoof" holiday by two buds who just liked to keep their racquetball game interesting (read more here) the holiday has been welcomed with opened arms by pirate community groups all around the world as well as several businesses.

I know, I know...back up....you are probably stuck on "pirate community groups". Well, yes there are groups of people who get together and celebrate the golden age of pirates throughout the world. It appears you find a lot of these groups in coastal cities but there may be one in your very own home town. Memphis has two now. These groups can be anything from reenactment and performance troupes, costuming and educational groups, to social groups. Fortune & Glory Pyrate Confederation, the group I am involved in, is a combination of all of these, focusing on education and entertainment. When we show up we bring with us exotic birds (Treasure Parrots), a pod of mermaids, a pirate band (Bluff City Barnacles) as well as living history displays, games and presentations.

Bluff City Barnacles
Want to know more or just see what the fuss is about? Check out these groups on Facebook and
Instagram. Pirate groups can also be found at your local comic cons, renaissance faires and pirate festivals. Yes we have our own festivals too!

Back to TLAPDay....

For the last four years I have had the pleasure of being onsite at the Fitz Casino Tunica for their annual Party Like a Pirate event. It turns out it is a great opportunity for the crew to bond and grow. It's also been exciting for me to see this event evolve. This year our crew really stepped up our game in the showmanship aspect and was regaled by the staff and management of Fitz as having provided the best event yet! Kudos to F&G Pyrates!

2016 Party Like a Pirate
2015 Party Like a Pirate
2014 Party Like a Pirate

Our crew also participated in an event at LeBonHeur's Children's Hospital and we will be at the Benjamin L. Hook's Public Library (Memphis) this weekend. So if you want to meet & greet with a bunch of awesome scalawags come on out. I can at least promise you will be entertained.

Wizard World Nashville 2017 Recap

I attend quite a few cons during the course of each year. I can usually be found working a table at local and regional cons, acting as a photog assistant, or just wandering the event floor some of the larger events in other cities. Overall, I consider myself pretty well versed in "Con Life". A recent outing marks my 3rd trip to the Wizard World in Nashville.

Over the course of the last few years, I have to admit, I may have gotten a bit spoiled. In my defense, I cut my con teeth on a huge event. The first con I ever attended was Wizard World New Orleans and oh what a glorious trip that was. I still fondly recall the feeling of walking into the convention and finding "my people". I swear I heard the voices of angels singing when I walked in the door. I had found my fellow nerds, and lots of them. The down side to attending such a large event as your first is my expectations were set very high. Some events live up to the initial experience while others do not.

I have attended many Wizard Worlds Cons, I mean they are the biggest company in the industry, and my overall thoughts on their structure, offerings and pricing have not changed much over the years.

There are many advantages to attending this size event. Example, if you want to meet and greet with celebs this is the way to go. Bigger attendance means better "star power", more vendors with larger booths, incredible panels and of course outstanding cosplays.

But they do definitely have their disadvantages as well, such as ticket prices and expensive and inconvenient parking, the inconvenience of entry through security, overcrowding on the floor during peak times, overpriced vendor offerings (I found a Hot Topic jacket marked up $40 and the CORSET I WAS WEARING marked up by $80...WTF people?), lots of Funko Pops and Nerd T's versus actual comics and collectibles, overpriced concessions, and tighter controls on celeb interactions.

I'm not going to spend any time blathering about the cosplay contests. I don't even consider entering WW cosplay contests and have discouraged members of my crew from entering because what you see on the floor vs. what arrives at contest time are very different. A lot of the cosplayers in these contests cannot wear their creations for long periods of time due to limited mobility. It's almost like viewing slightly animated statues. Always cool to see but definitely not big on functionality.

But all that is not really what this article is really about!

This time around I got to see the con from a totally different perspective. 48 hours prior to con I ended up with two sprained ankles, damage to the bottom of my left foot and broken toes. Since WW tickets are non-refundable and quite expensive we decided to locate a wheelchair for me and proceed with the planned trip.

I expected to be viewed differently but, in actuality, what happened was almost over-whelming. First, I understand my crew was not experienced in dealing with anyone in a chair so while being pushed around, I kept ending up past the end of the tables or parked on a wall. So the need to control my own surroundings kicked in.

The next thing that becomes grievously clear is that vendor booths are not designed for wheelchair bound people. I could not see a damn thing beyond the facade tables. I found my shopping very limited because either I could not fit into the booth or could not see on anything above...well chair level. So sales were definitely lost.

Of course security was easy for me to get through but at one point I found myself waiting next to a guy who was permanently in a chair and was quite embarrassed about my dumb little accident. I didn't know exactly how to talk to him without being a bumbling idiot. He commented on my awesome cosplay and questioned how I had the time to be in the chair and build a costume. Dear sir, thank you for being gracious as I broke every rule of polite conversation since I could find no way to graciously and honestly answer while hiding behind my humiliation. Truth is, I felt like my chair was an temporary annoyance while his was a life sentence.

I noticed most of the day, being below most people’s line of sight, I was out of the conversation and overlooked. I equate that to being a small child. Several people did try to include me but most forgot I was there, until I attempted to run over their feet.

What bothered me most was the disingenuous compliments I received on my cosplay all day. While seated, nobody could not see the total effect of the Bombshell Robin cosplay. They could not see the back of the custom jacket which took hours to create and months to locate all the patches I used. All most people saw was my garrison hat and goggles. I was approached by several people who wanted my picture and who seemed truly disappointed by the fact that I could actually get out of the chair. I began to realize that people were not appreciating me, but pitying me, and maybe looking for a token to fuss over. I did not want to be the shining example for Wizard World being handicap friendly because 1) I am not handicapped and 2) I found the site was not very wheelchair friendly.

Did I need to chair to get around? Yes. Was I confined to it all day? No. I could get out of the chair periodically but to avoid further damage to my foot and ankles I chose to stay in the chair as much as possible. I offered rides to a couple of people, loaned my chair as a prop for my little X-23, and acted as a walker to one member of my crew when she became tired from her actual disability.

One good thing from the wheelchair adventure was my friend and I had an awesome interaction with Dean Cain. He really is a Superman.

When the day was over I came to realize that I had been witness to something most don't get to see and I understand now how it affects people when we make assumptions or disingenuous assertions about their lot in life. In the end, I felt like C. Thomas Howell in that 80s movie Soul Man trying to justify his brief experience as a black man to James Earl Jones' character. As he pathetically explained, "I don't really know what it feels like sir. If I didn't like it, I could always get out."

Digging DeeperVol 3: Horror Con of Mississippi & Recap

Hello my Creepy Crawlies!

This past weekend, I was on hand at the Horror Con of Mississippi (HCOM) in Tupelo. My mission,
besides playing dress-up, visiting with kindred spirits and shopping for creepy goodies, was to document the day for my friends and fans who have never attended a horror con before...OK OK my real mission was to goof off and have fun!

For those of you who haven't heard of HCOM, it is a relatively small convention that packs a definite punch. From what I have been able to gather this is their first year at the Tupelo Furniture Market and they made quite a spatter...er I mean...splash.

There were several relevant celebrity guests in attendance, Michael Berryman (Hills Have Eyes), Linnea Quigley (80s Scream Queen), Bill Moseley (The Devils Rejects), R.A. Mihailoff (Leatherface), Andy Field (Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location), Greg & Dana Kewkirk of the Traveling Museum of the Paranormal and Occult, John Anderson (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Josh "TKO" Turner (Pro Wrestler & Actor), Kaylie Turner (Walking Dead), Rory Healy (Goosebumps), and Matthew Atchley (Artist). Alongside the celebs there were also several prop and movie car exhibits featured as well as a strong showing from the local haunted attractions and escape room. Of course there were the obligatory vendors with toys, comics, and books.

HMOC offered a full day of panels discussing topics like the Evolution of Horror, Character
Development for Haunted Houses, Movie Making, Cosplay & Props design, SFX demos and the obvious celebrity guest Q&A panels. Several independent film makers were screening movies as well and they actually turned out to be worth the time.

The events of the day included Karaoke (Scaryoke), Zombie Prom for 16+, an Amateur "Face Off" competition using everyday make up kits from your local retailer, laser tag, a board game library, pet adoption with the local humane society and the of course the Museum of Paranormal and Occult. I LOVED the museum. Greg and Dana not only offered a great selection of truly creepy items but they are magnificent storytellers and shared details about the acquisition and investigation of a lot of their items with me.

Two of the advertised events which originally captured my attention was the audience participation showing of Repo! the Genetic Opera, and Rocky Horror Picture Show. I was all geeked up to see a shadow cast of Repo! Which ended up being a sing-a-long and sadly that event seemed to fall flat. There were several attendees who were INTO the sing-a-long, Lauren Knight & myself included, but many people were not participating. My group decided not to stay for Rocky, partly due to the drive back to Memphis, and partly due to the fact that the arrangement of the projection setup was not conducive to a good shadow cast experience. Don't get me wrong, the effort was greatly appreciated but probably could have done with some consultation on how to properly pull it off.

The cosplayer attendance was minimal at this convention. CrissCross & Dollface Cosplay and Cami Roebuck Creative both had booths in the vendor area and were happy to pose for photos and share their expertise. However, floor participation was minimal. Was this because of horror con goers are
less likely to dress out or the temperature inside the building? One major "con" of this event was the obvious issues with the A/C. I am unsure if they were experiencing technical difficulties or if the space does not have have adequate A/C. Saturday was the hottest day of the year and we were in a warehouse...in costume. One couple, whom I know very well, left about mid-day to shower and change out of Creepy Clown gear. They arrived back and he donned an AWESOME Jason cosplay but could only stand the heat for a quick trip around the floor once and had to leave to shower and change again...this time into street clothes.

Entry Fees were very reasonable, a mere $15 per day or $25 for the weekend and Tupelo Furniture Market has ample parking and not a bad walk for a girl in spiky heels.

HCOM advertises it is a family friendly event and, seriously they were. I know you are thinking horror and kids might not go together but they had a great selection of kid friendly activities including inflatables, trick or treating at vendor booths, and Monster Mash a family costumed dance party. And the vendors were respectable in their displays, not pushing gratuitous images of nudity or gore.

Overall, this was a great event despite a few growing pains and I hope to be in attendance again next year. A couple recommendations for the event coordinators: Arrange for a couple food trucks outside as the nearest dining is about a 10-15 minute drive and I can only do so much nachos and pizza in a weekend, and have some well-informed staffers walking the floor to direct people to panels and screenings (we had a hard time finding a couple things or people to help us).

Here is my highlight video and remember to PLEASE be forgiving my hair & makeup totally wilted in the heat. As you can see this event was totally worth a bit of sweat!

Fashion Show or Film Festival? We Don't Know Either!

Hey guys & dolls I’m back and as promised with my multi-media fashion show recap complete with
film links!

When we were approached again about hosting our vintage fashion show we really wanted to create a unique and memorable experience, not only for the attendees but also for the ladies and gents involved in the show. With the help of DaLar Productions we decided to create a multi-media show which would highlight not only the fashion trends of the 1920s but the films of the era. With that, “Nostalgi-Vision” was created. As part of the process, we took on the challenge of creating 5 mini silent films.

The silent film era featured a wide variety of genres to choose from. Basically I knew I wanted to create a political satire film targeting prohibition and a classic keystone cop, a Film Noir, a horror movie, a Hollywood epic placed in Egypt (Yes I wanted to be Cleopatra) and a slapstick comedy complete with a custard pie fight. Since we all know flappers and Gatsby guys & dolls, I wanted to touch on different fashion trends, like casual and formal menswear, Egyptian revival and art deco.

The idea for our fashion show was to pair a look / outfit with a silent movie best representing the style. Of course, we had to recreate a lot of the looks using vintage and modern pieces that were not from the 1920s since fabric over 90 years old can be very fragile. That's the beauty of being part of a group like the Memphettes. You can build your look around all vintage pieces or you can accent reproduction and modern items with a pop of vintage flair. Either way, it's about the look and the attitude.

A great deal of effort went in to each film so we could make sure they appeared not only in the proper style, but that they appeared era correct in as much as we could pull off. Simple things like covering modern outlets and making sure cars weren't reflected in a window. It's harder than one might think. In the end, we produced the following films. Check them out and enjoy the fruits of our labor.

(Click on the title to watch the films!)

Film #1 – Alley Cats starring Comanche Rose, D’elle Memphis and D.E. LaRiviere

Film #2 – The Call starring Angel Logsdon

Film #3 – Midnight Train to Memphis starring Scarlett Fever and Christopher Stafford

Film #4 – The Pharaoh’s Bride starring D’elle Memphis and Jeremiah “Fish” Patton

Film #5 – Garden Party starring The Memphettes

I also want to recognize local musician Pete McCarty for providing the soundtrack for Alley Cats. It was perfect.

Will you see more of our films…yes you will as soon as we can remember our lines!

Personal note...once again I remind everyone our shows are extremely campy and created to be so.  So before you criticize remember...this is what we do for fun!  If this looks just your speed and you would like to join the crew for some of our "adventures"...drop me a line!

Southern Junkers Vintage Market

Southern Junker Vintage Market
Creator & Founder Ruth Barnes
Southern Junkers Vintage Market is a quarterly event complete with about 65 antique & vintage vendors, concessions and food trucks, art and decorating demos and of course, appearances by the Memphettes.

Originally created as a Facebook community page for people who love antiques, vintage and repurposed items Southern Junkers has evolved into a top notch, high quality shopping event for those of us who love antiquing.

I first became familiar with Southern Junkers when they were hosting an outdoor flea market event in 2012. My love of vintage drives me to not only purchase old stuff but to encourage The Mister to refurbish and repurpose forgotten pieces for me. You know, to “save” them from the dumpster. I guess you could describe my home décor style as pintrest-kitsch meets an episode of Hoarders. Southern Junkers, to me, had become that place to find that special starter piece for one of my projects.

The Selection of items you will find at Southern Junkers
When the Memphettes became involved with Southern Junkers it was due to the event's expansion and move into the Memphis Agri-Center International. Part of the expansion included entertainment for the guests which came in the form of a Vintage Fashion Show. The first time up we may have aimed too high…one hour long with over 100 outfits with ukuleles and a pirate…ummm…yeah…we overshot a bit. So to Ruth I would like to say I am grateful you found us and invited us but also allowed us to come back and continue to participate in these events.

Outfits from our first vintage fashion show!
and from our second show which was Rockabilly /
Western themed and full of campy goodness
Southern Junkers Vintage Market has definitely grown into a wonderful shopping and antiquing experience. But, I must comment here with the growth of the market I have noticed more completed, fully restored items versus the starter pieces I have come to look for with this market. There are still plenty of vintage items for a retro gal like me but the selection of these items was smaller this time. So sadly, this time around I must admit my group of ladies and gents purchased less and I found myself breezing past booths which were stocked with those fully restored pieces. Southern Junkers has become an interior decorators dream market, but not so much the vintage lifestyle market I normally shop at. While Southern Junkers is an enjoyable event I do kind of miss the original format where I was able to find pieces I could repurpose with my own flair vs something already upcycled in someone else's style.

OK so now about our fashion show. This last market represented out third endeavor in the fashion show circuit. This time around we decided to break away from traditional and create something unique for the audience. We went with a multi-media fashion show which integrated on stage models with a series of short silent movies. This time the focus of the fashion show was to highlight trends of the silent movie era and we did so by making our own silent films. It was a lot of fun now enjoy some photos of the market…

A decorators paradise!!
Wait WHAT?…your article is over with just a quick mention of the short films? Well that is a topic all by itself and I plan to share an entire post about the creation and showing of these films. This is what the industry calls a cliffhanger.

So until next time kids, stay in school, eat your veggies, and listen to your mom when she's talking. See you in the next episode.

Mint Cream Vintage Expo

Over the weekend, the crew of The Memphettes and I were enlisted as entertainment during the Mint Cream Vintage Expo.  Mint Cream is a relatively new market still in its infancy stage and 2017 marked the 2nd annual event.  The expo is organized and hosted by local vintage queen and blogger Amy Dobbins.  Check out Amy's Blog here

First, I must admit the most enticing part of this event for me is the unique location.  The expo is located in a downtown Memphis warehouse which is home to Tad Peirson’s American Dream Safari.  ADS is an indoor vintage trailer park complete with an assortment of vintage trailers and brightly painted hand made tire art and furniture.  Sound weird?  Well it is…weird and wonderful!!  American Dream Safari will also be happy to host you and your friends on a downtown tour of Memphis in vintage cars for a reasonable fee. Honestly, does is it really get any better than touring Memphis in a pink Cadillac??

Admission to Mint Cream was a mere $5 with encouragement to bring two cans of food for the Memphis Food Bank.  The market is contained within a relatively small space with about 8-10 vendors selling everything from vintage clothing and accessories to home décor.  There was a food truck and a small classic car show that kicked off at 5pm.  In addition to shopping and eating “Uni-Corn on the Cob” there were several demos that were both educational and entertaining.  Local hair gurus Kasey Dees and “Razor” Rob Brennan were on hand to show how to create the perfect vintage “do”.  Hey guys want the perfect pompadour? Here is a clue…set up an appointment and visit Memphis hair icon “Razor” Rob!  Trust me on this one!

"Razor" Rob Brennan with his model James Hambrick
(MidSouthWeaponX & Brick House Training)
Amy Dobbins, Kasey Dees (Hair Slayer) and her lovely model
The Memphettes followed up the hair demos with a quick vintage fashion show featuring attire from 1940s-1980’s which accompanied a performance with the retro rocking sounds of Los Psychosis.

The Memphettes Vintage Fashion Show spanned from 1940 to 1980.

Oh yeah and Little Elvis…how can you forget Little Elvis?  There was a meet and greet/photo op with Little Elvis.  This kid is ADORABLE and the living embodiment of The King in a small child.  I must admit he even looks like Elvis!

Little Elvis - Isn't he just a doll!!!!  Pictured with mom, Katrina
Photos by RetroPhotography
Here is what you must know about this market.  If you are looking for antique or boutique style booths with the latest in shiny Pinterest-y goodies this isn't really the place for you.  If you are looking for vintage clothing, accessories, home décor and other bizarre happy treasures this is your kind of place!  The vendors priced items to sell, not to fund their retirement or kid's college fund.  The selections were not vast, but what was there was cool and eye catching.

Comanche Rose really enjoyed the day at Mint Cream!
The environment at Tad's is a little on the, shall we say rustic side and while it may not be the most aesthetically appealing place for some people, there is a vibe there that seemed to add to the event.  The crowd had a genuine connection to both the vintage scene and the overall feel of the market.  Vintage enthusiasts left feeling like they had been to a gathering of like-minded folks and it had a familiarity to it that made it more than just a vintage sale.  It seemed kind of like a family get-together.

Comanche Rose & I had a blast and of course we loved seeing you all!
Hoping Mint Cream Vintage Expo will be back next year with even more to love.

Until Next Time...
